Fallen Leaves

You know how sometimes the wind can take ahold of a bunch of fallen leaves and spin them round?

You can refer to that as a whirlwind (noun)

or you could just say the leaves were whirling around (verb).

First, the leaves were lying there, lifeless.

Then the wind came and brought them to life for a brief moment,

then the wind disappeared and the leaves returned to their lifeless state.

Our bodies are like the leaves.

Made of material that was already here before our soul entered the world.

The same material will be here long after we have departed.

So what are we, then?

The leaves, which will still be here when we are gone?

Or the wind that animated them?

Interestingly, the word for wind and spirit is the same in many languages.

Funny, that.
